A family story from the 1920s recalls that Granny sewed up-to-date school clothes for her daughter.
Granny and Grandpa had to walk two miles to the Zirconia Post Office and carry the unwieldy rug up the winding trail. Even parcel post couldn’t deliver without roads. Large roses with trailing ivy surrounded by colorful ribbon designs were popular, and Granny kept a fairly new linoleum in each room.However, bringing the long, rolled-up package to the mountain required two people. But the “front room” was special, and she wanted it to look modern — like the pictures she saw in the catalog.Another decorative, household purchase was a new linoleum rug, carefully chosen from Sears-Roebuck. (Her quaint, descriptive verb showed the level of concentration necessary for such important decisions.)She still sewed ruffled, flour-sack, kitchen curtains. Granny liked that combination she would have felt insecure with see-through curtains without window shades.She “studied” the catalog for an hour or two before choosing those styles.
Being talented at rough carpentry, Granny built a kitchen cabinet with a proper-sized opening for the new sink. Instead of carrying heavy pans outside in bad weather, she could simply pour used water down the drain.After “studying” catalog pictures, she realized she could make her plan work. Even without running water, she thought a sink would be convenient for the disposal of dishwater, mopping, and bath water.
When ordering a new hat, Granny “studied” the catalog choices.As she and I turned the pages in the millinery section, Granny pointed out hats worn by older models. Once again, the Sears-Roebuck catalog provided a window to the outside world for farm folks.During my childhood, well-dressed ladies wore hats, and Granny was particularly fond of them because her hair wasn’t as thick as it used to be. Still, she considered her idea to be brilliant and wondered how she managed all those years without her new, dry sink.The catalog illustrations enabled Granny to visualize contemporary options that could be adapted to her country lifestyle, and she appreciated any new convenience on Bear Mountain. But all necessary piping wasn’t included when the sink arrived, so she had to place a second order.
